Healing with

Healing with Intention
Moss Communications
is proud to offer Healing with Heart: Inspirations for Health
Care Professionals as an antidote to the malaise, burnout and
stress facing health care professionals every day. The book reminds
us of the importance of practicing the art as well as the science of
healing.

In this reflection, Healing with Heart uses an analogy of an
artist drawing a portrait to suggest that our technical competence
and use of technology are not solely what make us good at our job.
When we slow down and practice the art of healing, patients are
better served and as health care professionals, we know we’ve truly
done our very best. Here is an excerpt from the reflection, Healing
with Intention, from the book, Healing with Heart:
Recently, I had the opportunity to watch a highly accomplished
artist draw a man’s face. She would stare at him for a time, then
look down at her paper, draw a few lines, and then lift her gaze to
study his face again. She must have done this a hundred times, maybe
more. She spent much more time looking than drawing. The result was
remarkable. Her sketch, while not an exact likeness, caught the
personality of the fellow in an astonishing way. She saw what many
of us who knew the man, never saw.
Do you think patients know the difference between being cared for by
someone who is rushed, who simply wants to get the job done, and
someone who moves slowly enough and with a conscious awareness of
the impact their actions have on the people around them? Do you
think our coworkers can sense the same thing?
