Healing with
Heart from Moss Communications
Influence
Healing with Heart, the
book of inspirations by Moss Communications, is comprised of a
series of reflections designed to remind health care professionals
of the reason they were drawn to their profession. One way that
Healing with Heart accomplishes this is through stories and thoughts
that remind employees of the control they have over their own
attitudes and behavior. This reflection entitled Influence, suggests
that all of us have the potential to be leaders in our organization
by responsibly exerting our influence over those around us.

Healing with Heart is an intensely practical, real-world book. In
this reflection, readers are asked to look at their own leadership
qualities and how they can influence others in a positive,
responsible way. Here is an excerpt from this reflection:
Whenever we elect a new president, or when a new pope is chosen, or
when a company changes CEOs, the people who are looking to this
person for guidance have the opportunity to think about their
expectations. We read about the new person in the paper and wonder
what qualities he or she will bring to the post.
It is interesting to consider that all of us are leaders, whether we
know it or not, whether we have the title to prove it or not.
Everyone in a hospital setting is a leader, not just the physicians
and the head administrators. Think about it this way: everybody
influences everyone else. Our attitudes and the way we relate to
others, shape the work place and impact the feelings and behavior of
those around us.
It can be a real stretch to believe that this principle applies to
everyone. It is tempting, for instance, to think that the guys who
repair faucets or scrub marks off the walls, are merely followers.
Yet we can feel their presence throughout the work space as much as
the shift supervisor’s, charge nurse’s or department head’s. We may
not always be specifically aware of it, but we are influenced by how
this person holds himself, by the quality of his presence, and by
the attitude he exhibits.
Our decision to be the best at what we do, to become more than we
are will have a lasting impact on those around us. We need to
remember that we are all leaders within our own daily world…
