Studer Group recommends Healing with Heart for Leadership Development Initiatives

We are proud to announce that Lynne Cunningham of the Studer Group has just issued a book review recommending Healing with Heart as a leadership tool and a book worthy of being on everyone's library.  Of course, we want to see it on everyone's desk and in everyone's locker or in everyone's patch pocket, worn from frequent use!  Here's Lynne's review:

Book Review

I just read a good book of stories that I think should be added to your Service Excellence Library. Healing with Heart:  Inspirations for health care professionals.  Re-ignite your passion for your work is a storytelling book started as a series of weekly e-mails at Exempla Healthcare in Colorado.  The stories are short and well-written.  Healing with Heart would make a good LDI or Hospital Week gift.

"Inspiring a Workforce

Presenters: Terri Moss, co-author of Healing with Heart: Inspirations for Health Care Professionals and Julie Ammon, SPHR, Recruitment Manager, Exempla St. Joseph Hospital, Denver

At first glance one would assume that this inspiring presentation would have been geared only towards healthcare professionals. However, after attending the presentation as a manager myself, not in the Healthcare profession, but working with and managing people never-the-less, I walked away with a much better understanding of how important it is to maintain a good staff and to appreciate them everyday.

I was surprised at the high cost of disengaged employees. I was shocked to hear that 54% of employees are not engaged or are checked out from their work, while 17% are actively disengaged. This leaves only 29% of employees actively engaged in their jobs! The result of these numbers for most businesses: employees negatively impact the goals of the organization, customer service suffers and there is a negative impact on overall costs to the organization. We are left with this question: What should we, as leaders in our companies, do to move these employees in the right direction?

The idea of having passion in the workplace, as presented by Terri Moss, is something I believe has gone by the wayside for many reasons that were mentioned: lack of trust with co-workers, lack of leadership, the demanding work environment, fear of developing relationships at work and trying to keep private lives separate from the workplace.

The workplace has become more mechanical, due to the many restrictions leaders feel they have today. Paying attention to the ten “C’s” of employee engagement, presented by Julie Ammon, should help to create more passion in the workplace, which will in turn raise the percentage of highly engaged employees. They are: Connect, Career, Clarity, Convey, Congratulate, Contribute, Control, Collaborate, Creditability and Confidence.

Here’s an example of a concept from Terri’s book (Healing with Heart) , helping healthcare workers focus on what brought them into health care in the first place:

“I will live my life today with a greater sense of awareness and appreciation of my life, my work and the people around me. I will strive to approach my life and work with more reflection. I will look at the beauty of life and creation and awaken to the gifts that surround me.”
